Tear-off and haul-away are usually included; fascia repair is a separate line. Where the cost climbs is the hillside setup and the older-house extras — half-round profile, copper, slate roofs — not the neighborhood: the same seamless system costs about the same in Bloomfield as in Bethel Park. The installation page covers the sizing, and copper gutters in Pittsburgh covers copper.

Box gutter and slate-roof work

EPDM relining of a sound built-in gutter is $35–$60 per foot; copper relining $90–$160 per foot; rebuilding rotted gutter boards and framing adds $40–$120 per foot where it's needed. A 30-foot rowhouse front is usually $1,300–$2,400; a full wraparound on a large four-square with rot at the corners is $6,000–$12,000. The box gutter page explains why the wood decides the number and why a good contractor opens a section before quoting.

Gutter guards

Aluminum screen $5–$9 per foot; stainless micro-mesh $10–$18 per foot; reverse-curve $18–$30 per foot. On a 160-foot home that's roughly $800–$2,900 depending on type, and cheapest when done with new gutters. The gutter guards page matches guard type to tree.

Gutter cleaning

Single-story $120–$200, two-story $180–$300, usually priced by the house rather than the hour. See gutter cleaning for what a cleaning should include.

What moves the price

  • The hillside. A house with a one-story front and a three-story back needs staging on the downhill side. It's a common reason a Pittsburgh quote is higher than the national figure.
  • Stories. Two-story work costs 15–25% more for the setup; three-story rowhouses more again.
  • Roof type. Slate and metal need different hangers and slower work. Shingle is the baseline.
  • Corners. Every inside and outside corner is a miter. A hip roof with ten corners costs more per foot than a plain gable.
  • Fascia condition. A common surprise on a 1960s house. Ask for it to be checked before the quote is written.
  • Gutter size. Six-inch is about 20% more than five-inch and worth it on big roofs and under sliding snow.
  • Color. White, brown and the common trim colors are stock; a specialty color can add a week and a small coil surcharge.

How to get an accurate estimate

  • Know roughly how many feet of gutter the house has; the length of each wall is enough.
  • Count the downspouts and note where each one ends.
  • Say whether the roof is shingle, slate or metal, and how many stories the high side is.
  • Mention any soft fascia, sagging runs or leaks you've already seen.
  • Ask for each item — gutter, downspouts, fascia, guards, haul-away — as its own line.

When prices tend to change

Demand tends to peak in early spring, after the ice lets go, and in late fall before the freeze. Booking a replacement in late summer or early fall often gives more choice of dates. Specialty colors, copper and half-round profiles can take longer to order. None of this changes the work itself, but it can change how soon it gets done.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Repair a sound aluminum system instead of replacing it.
  • Do the fascia and the gutters in one visit, so the setup is paid once.
  • Add guards at the same time as new gutters.
  • Extend downspouts to the surface before paying for buried drains.
  • Get two or three written quotes on the same spec, so you're comparing like with like.

A worked example

A two-story brick colonial in Ross Township with 190 feet of gutter, five downspouts, a hip roof with eight corners, and one soft corner of fascia: 6-inch .032 aluminum with 3x4 downspouts at $13.50 a foot is $2,565; twelve feet of fascia at $12 is $144; extensions on five downspouts at $40 are $200. Total about $2,900, one day, old gutters hauled away. The same house quoted at $1,800 is likely 5-inch .027 metal on spike hangers with 2x3 downspouts — the system you're replacing, installed again.

Reading a gutter estimate

Pittsburgh contractors' quotes vary in format, so ask for the gauge (.032, not .027), the hanger type and spacing (hidden screw hangers, 24 inches or closer), the downspout size, and whether haul-away and fascia are included. Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act requires many home improvement contractors to register with the Attorney General's office; look up a contractor's registration number there and check with that office for the current rules, including written-contract requirements. A good estimate is free, itemized and clear about how long the price holds. If someone wants a signature before they leave the driveway, that's a sales model, not a price. What the price per foot actually buys goes line by line.

Questions gutter contractors get asked

Is it cheaper to repair or replace gutters?

Repair if the gutters are aluminum, under about 20 years old, and the trouble is in a few places. Replace if they're sectional, rusting steel, or more than a third of the runs need work — patching those adds up to a replacement without the warranty. Box gutters are a separate calculation: relining a sound trough is almost always cheaper than converting.

Does homeowners insurance cover ice dam damage to gutters in Pennsylvania?

It depends on the policy. Sudden damage — a gutter torn off by ice or a fallen limb — is often treated differently from wear or a clog. Photograph the damage yourself before anything is moved, then check your policy or ask your agent, including whether a separate wind and hail deductible applies.

How much are gutters for a 1,800 sq ft house in Pittsburgh?

Usually 140–170 linear feet of gutter, so $1,300–$2,200 for 5-inch seamless aluminum and $1,700–$2,600 for 6-inch on a single story. Add 15–25% for two stories, and a line for fascia if any of it is soft. That's a typical range, not a quote for your house.

Do prices include taking down the old gutters?

Usually, but not always. Most seamless installation quotes include taking down and hauling away the old gutters and downspouts. Check that it's written on the estimate, along with any fascia repair, so there's no added charge on install day.

Why is my quote higher than the national average?

Usually because of the house rather than the city. A hillside lot that needs staging, a slate or metal roof, many corners, or soft fascia all add cost. Ask the contractor which lines push the price up and whether any of them are optional.
